Why I Started Detroit Aviation Photography
Why I Started Detroit Aviation Photography
By David A. Henderson
Why did I start Detroit Aviation Photography.? The simple answer is that I love airliners. The longer answer is that this business became the perfect combination of a lifelong passion, a creative outlet, and a dream that I finally decided to pursue.
My journey into aviation started long before Detroit Aviation Photography ever existed. Aviation has always been part of my life. My father worked for both TWA and USAir, and growing up around that environment planted a seed that never really went away. Airplanes fascinated me from a young age, and that fascination stayed with me throughout adulthood.
After relocating back to Michigan from Kansas City, I decided one afternoon to dust off my camera and head over to Detroit Metro Airport. Living only fifteen minutes from one of the busiest airports in the country made it an easy choice. At first, it was just something fun to do. I'd visit a few times each month, take some photos, and enjoy watching the traffic.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
I was standing in a hotel parking lot near the end of the runway when a Delta A350-900 passed directly overhead. The sight, the sound, and the sheer size of that aircraft left a lasting impression on me. I was hooked.
What started as an occasional hobby quickly became an obsession. The photography bug took hold, and before long I found myself searching for better equipment, learning new techniques, and spending more time around airports than I ever imagined. Every new camera body, lens, and editing technique opened another door and challenged me to improve.
As my photography improved, I began to realize something important. I wasn't just taking pictures of airplanes. I was documenting moments in aviation history.
Many of the aircraft I photograph today represent milestones that will never happen again. The last aircraft off a production line. A final flight before retirement. A special livery celebrating a unique moment in an airline's history. A rare international visitor. These aren't just airplanes. They're pieces of history, and once they're gone, they're gone forever.
That realization became the foundation of Detroit Aviation Photography.
I started this business because I wanted to share that passion with others. I wanted fellow aviation enthusiasts to be able to display those moments on their walls, add them to their collections, and appreciate the stories behind the aircraft just as much as I do.
At the same time, I wanted to challenge myself. Building a business is completely different from taking photographs. It has forced me to learn website design, marketing, product development, branding, printing, customer service, and countless other skills. Every day presents a new challenge, and that's part of what makes the journey rewarding.
Detroit Aviation Photography has also given me an opportunity to express my creativity in ways I never expected. Beyond traditional photography, I've explored digital art, collector prints, historical collections, aviation milestone series, and unique ways of presenting aviation history through imagery. Creating these products allows me to combine art and aviation into something that feels truly meaningful.
From the beginning, quality has been one of my highest priorities. If my name is attached to a print, I want it to be something I would proudly display in my own home. That's why I spend so much time selecting images, editing carefully, producing certificates of authenticity, and ensuring every product meets the standards I set for myself. I believe collectors deserve quality, and that's exactly what I strive to deliver.
Building a respected brand has become equally important. Detroit Aviation Photography isn't just a website or a collection of photographs. It's a representation of my passion, my work ethic, and my commitment to preserving aviation history. Every page, every product, and every customer interaction contributes to that reputation.
Of course, I would be lying if I said there wasn't also a practical side to this journey. Like many small business owners, I hope to build something that provides long-term value. My goal isn't simply to make sales today. My goal is to create an asset that continues to grow over time, supports future opportunities, and contributes to my retirement years down the road.
More than anything, though, Detroit Aviation Photography represents a vision that I've carried for years. A vision of creating something meaningful, something lasting, and something that combines everything I love about aviation and photography into one place.
The truth is, Detroit Aviation Photography exists because I finally decided to stop saying "someday" and start building.
It's the result of following a lifelong dream.
It's the result of turning a hobby into something more.
It's the result of wanting to preserve aviation history.
It's the result of wanting to create meaningful work.
And it's the result of believing that if you're passionate enough about something, it's worth taking the chance to see where it can lead.
This is only the beginning of the journey, and I'm grateful to everyone who has followed along so far.
Thank you for supporting Detroit Aviation Photography and helping me turn a vision into reality.
